I was inspired by Sharon at Casaubon’s Book to measure and radically reduce my energy consumption (and GHG emissions) to 10% of the American average by means of conservation in seven categories: gasoline, electricity, heating and cooking energy, water, garbage, consumer spending, and food.
There is a 90% Reduction website and a Yahoo forum, but I recommend that you begin by googling Casaubon’s book.
Sharon made the point that by setting these goals and measuring and reporting our progress, we can help identify what we can do as individuals and where we need infrastructure and public policy change in order to make meaningful improvements.
I think that’s smart. I also think that becoming mindful of all these elements will foster healthy changes in the way I live and my state of mind. Alternatively, I could become narrow and cramped, preoccupied with restrictions.
So let’s try to do it the right way.
